About

I’m Myles, a psychotherapist working with adults and couples. My psychotherapy and counselling services is named MTD Psychotherapy.

My approach to therapy is calm, practical and straightforward. I believe therapy should be a place where you can talk openly about what is happening in your life, without judgement and without feeling that you need to have everything figured out before you arrive.

People come to therapy for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a very clear issue – anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties, grief, insomnia or a major change in life. At other times, it is harder to put a finger on what is wrong. You might simply feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected or know that something needs to change.

I have a particular interest with clients dealing with insomnia and sleep difficulties, and work with people who may have struggled with poor sleep for months or even years, often alongside stress, anxiety or an overactive mind.

I don’t believe in unnecessary jargon or making therapy more complicated than it needs to be. We start with what is happening for you now, try to understand what may be contributing to it, and work together towards something that feels more manageable.

Qualifications & Experience

Qualification I hold a Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy from ICHAS (Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences) in conjunction with Griffith College - Dublin.

My professional training covered the major areas required for therapy practice, including counselling and psychotherapy theory, human development, therapeutic skills and the therapeutic relationship, mental health and psychological difficulties.

My training also involved exploring different approaches to psychotherapy and understanding how experiences throughout life – including childhood, family relationships, loss, trauma and significant life events – can continue to influence how we think, feel, relate and cope as adults.

My learning continues beyond my formal qualification through ongoing professional development, reading and training, with particular interests in neurodiversity and ADHD, trauma, relationships and insomnia.
Experience
2+ years in Psychotherapy
I completed two years of direct client sessions with MyMove Counselling in Limerick, where I gained more than 400 hours of direct experience working with a wide range of clients.

I worked with both men and women, from their early twenties to post retirement. Across short, medium and longer-term therapy.

People came to therapy with many different experiences and difficulties, including addiction, anxiety, stress, feeling stuck, difficult life choices, relationship and marital breakdown, the impact of unsettled or difficult childhood experiences, workplace bullying, bereavement and trauma.

Some clients came with one particular issue they wanted to address. For others, life had become much more complicated, with several difficulties overlapping and affecting each other. In these situations, part of our work was to slowly unravel what was happening, separate the different issues and begin to make what initially felt overwhelming more manageable.

This experience helped me to understand that therapy does not need to begin with a perfectly defined problem. Sometimes the starting point is simply knowing that something isn't right and having a place to begin talking about it.
Approach My practise approach within MTD Psychotherapy is practical and collaborative. I don’t believe that one way of working suits everyone, so how we work together will depend on you, what you are experiencing and what you want from therapy.

I often start with practical CBT and REBT techniques, particularly when someone is struggling with what is happening in their life right now. But I also believe that lasting change often comes from understanding where our reactions and patterns began.

Sometimes that means looking back at earlier life experiences and making sense of how you learned to cope, at that time. Your reactions may have made perfect sense then, but often the difficulty is that we can carry them into adult life, relationships and situations where they no longer work for us.

Together, we can begin to recognise those patterns, understand rather than judge them, and find different ways of responding that fit the person and the life you have today.

I see therapy as something we do together. I won’t tell you how to live your life, but I will ask questions, sometimes challenge you, offer another perspective and help you make sense of what may initially feel complicated or overwhelming.

Above all, I aim to provide a calm, respectful space where you can speak openly and where therapy feels human, useful and relevant to your life.

FAQs

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

You don’t need to be in crisis or even know exactly what is wrong to come to therapy. You may be dealing with anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties or a particular event, or you may simply feel stuck or know that something in your life needs to change. We can start from there.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to talk about what has brought you to therapy and what you would like to get from it. There is no pressure to tell your whole life story in one session. We start with what feels most important to you and take it from there.

Do you work with insomnia and sleep problems?

Yes. I have a particular interest in insomnia and work with people who have difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep or who have developed anxiety around sleep itself. My approach is practical and structured, while also considering stress, anxiety, an overactive mind and other factors that may be contributing to poor sleep.

Do you offer couples therapy?

Yes. I work with couples who may be struggling with communication, conflict, emotional or physical distance, recurring arguments or simply feeling that they have become stuck. Couples therapy is not about deciding who is right or wrong. It is about understanding what is happening between you and finding more useful ways of communicating and responding to each other.
